A Legacy Worth Passing On

Nearly 250 years ago, a group of men gathered to sign a document that would forever change the course of history. The United States was born through sacrifice, courage, and an unwavering belief that freedom was worth defending. Today, every one of those men is gone. Their voices have long been silenced. Their homes have faded into history. Their generation has passed away.

Yet their legacy remains.

Because they were willing to sacrifice for something greater than themselves, we have inherited the blessings of liberty. We enjoy the freedoms they fought to secure. We speak openly because they refused to remain silent. We worship freely because they believed that rights come from God, not government. We pursue life, liberty, and happiness because they laid a foundation that has endured for nearly two and a half centuries.

A legacy is never measured by how long a person lives. It is measured by what they leave behind.

As remarkable as America's founding is, there is another legacy that is infinitely greater.

Long before the Declaration of Independence was written, God gave His Word to humanity. Through prophets, apostles, faithful scribes, translators, pastors, missionaries, and ordinary believers, the Bible has been carefully preserved and faithfully passed from one generation to the next. Kingdoms have risen and fallen. Empires have disappeared. Civilizations have crumbled. Yet God's Word has remained.

The apostle Peter wrote:

"The grass withers, and the flower falls off, But the word of the Lord endures forever." (1 Peter 1:24-25, LSB)

For thousands of years, faithful men and women have guarded the Scriptures, often at great personal cost. Some gave their freedom. Some gave their possessions. Many gave their very lives so that future generations could hold God's Word in their hands.

Because of their faithfulness, we can open a Bible today and hear the very words of God.

  • The Declaration of Independence established a nation. The Bible reveals the King of Kings.

  • The Declaration speaks of earthly liberty. The Bible proclaims freedom from sin through Jesus Christ.

  • The Declaration points people toward the pursuit of happiness. The Bible points people toward everlasting joy in the presence of God.

One legacy has shaped a country. The other transforms eternity.

Now the question belongs to us.

What legacy will we leave behind?

Will our children inherit more than our possessions? Will they receive more than stories about our accomplishments? Will they inherit a deep love for Christ, a commitment to His church, and a confidence in His Word?

Every generation receives a legacy. Every generation also has the responsibility to pass one on.

The founders of America entrusted us with freedom. The saints who came before us entrusted us with the gospel. It is now our turn to faithfully hand that treasure to the next generation.

May we be remembered not merely for what we built, accumulated, or achieved, but because we faithfully passed on the truth of God's Word.

Political freedom is a priceless gift.

Eternal truth is an everlasting inheritance.

Let's make sure we leave both in good hands.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Pastor Jody
