Fasting
Fasting is a practice that is deeply rooted in the history of many religious traditions, including Christianity. In the Bible, fasting is often mentioned to demonstrate humility, to repent of sins, and to draw closer to God. Here is a brief overview of what the Bible says about fasting and how it can be a meaningful spiritual practice for believers today.
In the Old Testament, fasting is mentioned to demonstrate sorrow or humility before God. For example, in the book of Jonah, the people of Nineveh fasted as a sign of their repentance when Jonah preached to them. In the book of Esther, the Jews fasted and prayed for deliverance from their enemies. In the New Testament, Jesus himself fasted for 40 days in the wilderness before beginning his ministry, and he later taught his disciples about the importance of fasting.
Fasting is not only a physical practice, but also a spiritual one. When we fast, we abstain from food and other pleasures to focus on our relationship with God. In the Bible, fasting is often accompanied by prayer and seeking God's will. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus says, "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
Fasting can be a powerful way to draw closer to God and seek his will for our lives. It can help us to develop self-control, discipline, and reliance on God. However, it is important to remember that fasting is not a way to earn God's favor or to try to manipulate him. It is simply a way to humble ourselves before Him and to seek His guidance and direction.
If you are interested in incorporating fasting into your spiritual practice, it is important to approach it with prayer and discernment. Ask God to show you his will for your fast and to give you the strength and guidance you need to follow through with it. It is also important to listen to your body and to make sure that you are taking care of your physical needs during the fast.
Fasting is a biblical practice that can be a powerful tool for spiritual growth and drawing closer to God. It is a way to humble ourselves before him and to seek his will for our lives. If you are interested in fasting during our corporate fast in February, approach it with prayer and discernment, and remember to listen to God, your body, and take care of your physical needs.
